Chapter Eleven

Captain Lucas Breznet did not like being summoned. It was an insult to his rank and an affront to his title. Even when his superiors in the Vegas Police Department summoned him, Breznet took offense. For a citizen to summon him, regardless of who they were, Breznet was pissed.

“I know one of them motherfucka’s in these bitches pocket now,” Lucas grunted. “I don’t give a fuck how much money they got, ain’t no way in hell one phone call can be made, and I got to come out to see these bastards.”

“You ain’t surprised, though,” Maurice replied. “Them some punk bastards down at headquarters. “They’ll bend over and hand a motherfucka the soap for real.”

All Lucas could do was shake his head. Maurice was right. Most of the higher-ups that occupied the offices at headquarters were appointees of the mayor. In other words, they were cronies who did the mayor’s bidding. There were one or two that had actually done street-level police work before, but for the most part, the upper echelon of Las Vegas law enforcement were academics, cronies, and fucktards. Lucas knew better than to have real expectations of them, but every now and then, he allowed himself to forget that they wasn’t shit. They didn’t care about what actually happened to Lucas and his investigators. They just wanted this case closed. Too much heat was coming down on their asses, and they were scrambling.

But he had to keep it together. Breznet couldn’t allow how he felt about his superiors or the summons to affect how he dealt with the family. That’s why Maurice, his lead detective, was there with him. Maurice’s disposition was equally as fiery; yet, he would bring balance to the situation, keeping Breznet from blowing up and acting out of emotion.

Maurice pulled up to the elaborate rod iron gate that enclosed the DiCarlo mansion.

“You ready for this shitshow, man?”

“As ready as I’ll ever be,” Breznet huffed.

“Alright. Let’s get this over with.”

Maurice lowered the driver’s side window and pressed the button on the callbox.

“May we help you?” A voice cracked through the box.

“LVPD,” Maurice replied.

“Please drive around to the front of the house and park your vehicle there.”

Before Maurice could roll up the window, the iron gate opened slowly. Neither officer had any expectation as to what the DiCarlo mansion looked like, but they were both awestruck as their cruiser meandered down the winding path towards the residence. Multiple stone buildings embanked what they assumed was the primary residence. From the driveway, they could see a golf course, swimming pools, a basketball court, and multiple garages, presumably to house all the luxury vehicles the DiCarlo’s were known to have.

“This motherfucka needs its own zip code,” Maurice commented as he pulled the cruiser under the awning that donned the front of the mansion. Breznet agreed but didn’t say anything. He was already over being there, and they hadn’t even talked to the family yet. Climbing out of the vehicle, Breznet smoothed down his suit jacket,
